Why this site exists
Search for almost anything about Tana Toraja and you get two kinds of result. Listings that want to sell you a package, and posts written years ago that nobody has checked since. Both repeat the same handful of numbers, and a surprising amount of what circulates turns out to trace back to a single source that went offline a long time ago.
There are two things travellers actually need, and neither one is well covered.
The first is logistics that are true today. How you get to Toraja from Makassar, what the journey really involves, what things cost, and what is open when.
The second is harder, and it is the reason this site is worth building. Toraja's funeral ceremonies are not attractions. They are the most significant events in a family's life, and visitors are sometimes welcome at them. A traveller deciding whether to go, and how to behave if they do, deserves a straight answer rather than either a sales pitch or a list of curiosities. That is the part of this site we care most about getting right.
Who publishes it
Toraja Tourism is published by Asik Travel, which runs several specialist destination sites in Indonesia. Enquiries from this site are answered by the same team that handles the group's other destinations, so a reply may be signed Asik Travel. We would rather say that plainly than have it come as a surprise.
How trips work here
You can't check out on this site, and that's deliberate. You send an enquiry, we look at what you want, and we come back to you by email with what is actually possible for your dates. Nothing is booked and no payment is taken until you have seen that and agreed to it.
The rules we hold ourselves to
These are enforced by the tooling that builds this site, not just by good intentions.
We don't invent facts. If we can't verify a fee, a journey time or a schedule from a source we trust, the page says so instead of guessing. We'd rather look less authoritative than send someone on a wasted trip.
We don't write about ceremonies as entertainment. There's a vocabulary that attaches itself to Toraja in travel writing, full of words chosen to make a funeral sound thrilling, and we don't use it. Our own build refuses to publish a page containing it.
Where a cultural claim is contested between credible sources, we say it's contested rather than picking whichever version reads better.
We show our sources on the pages that make factual claims, so you can check us.
We don't link to other tour operators or booking sites. That's a commercial decision, and you should know we're making it.
