Buntu Burake: the hilltop Christ statue above Makale

Buntu Burake is a hill above Makale, in Tana Toraja regency, and on top of it stands a bronze figure of Christ with arms outstretched. It's called the Patung Yesus Kristus Memberkati, the statue of Christ blessing. This is a modern religious monument and a viewpoint, not a heritage site, and the honest page says so at the top rather than at the bottom.

The numbers, and the claim that needs a qualifier

The figure is recorded at 45 metres, cast in bronze. The hill stands at roughly 1,700 metres above sea level. A design competition was held in 2013, foundation work began in 2014, and the statue was completed in 2015. President Joko Widodo inaugurated it on 23 December 2018. The designers are named as Supriadi, an artist from Yogyakarta, and Hardo Wardoyo Suwarto. The project was pushed by the then governor of South Sulawesi, Syahrul Yasin Limpo, as a tourism initiative.

You'll see it described as the tallest statue of Jesus in the world. That claim travels without its qualifier, which is where the confusion starts. The superlative is about elevation, not about the sculpture: it's the highest in the sense of standing on a high hill, not in the sense of being a taller figure than the ones in Poland or Brazil. Repeated without that distinction it's simply wrong, and it's repeated without that distinction almost everywhere.

We flag it here rather than quietly dropping it, because a reader who has seen the claim elsewhere deserves to know what it actually rests on.

What it tells you about Toraja

This is the useful part, and it's the reason a monument built in the 2010s earns a page on a site otherwise concerned with much older things.

Toraja is overwhelmingly Christian. In Rantepao district the recorded figures run to roughly 85 per cent Protestant and roughly 9 per cent Catholic. A great many visitors arrive with an impression that Torajan funeral practice is something separate from, or in tension with, Christianity. It isn't. Families who hold a rambu solo', the funeral ceremony, are in the overwhelming majority also church members, and the ceremony and the church service sit inside the same life rather than competing for it.

Visiting

The hill rises directly above Makale town below the hill, and the statue is visible from a good deal of the surrounding valley. Access is by road up the hill, followed by steps.
