Sarambu Assing: a waterfall in Bittuang district

Sarambu Assing is a waterfall in Lembang Patongloan, Kecamatan Bittuang, in the western part of Tana Toraja regency. Sarambu is the Torajan word for waterfall, which is the root of a naming problem worth clearing up before anything else.

Two waterfalls, similar names, different regencies

Indonesia's national tourism system records a waterfall called Sarambu Ponglu', in Lembang Ponglu', Kecamatan Buntu Pepasan. That's in Toraja Utara, the northern regency, and it's a different place.

Sarambu Assing is in Tana Toraja, the southern regency, in Bittuang, which is west of Makale. The two get merged constantly in online listings, and we've seen a photograph of one used to illustrate the other. If you're arranging a visit, name the district as well as the waterfall, or you may find yourself driving to the wrong side of Toraja.

We can't tell you which of the two the pictures you've seen actually show, because that's exactly the confusion we're describing.

What we won't tell you

There's a height figure for Sarambu Assing in circulation, and a distance for the walk in. Both appear on tour operator pages and travel blogs, which this site doesn't treat as sources, and neither carries a date or a measurement method. We're leaving both out rather than laundering someone's guess into a fact by repeating it.

We'd rather say plainly that we don't know than publish a number that turns out to be wrong for a reader standing at the bottom of a path.

What's consistent across accounts is that the waterfall isn't roadside. There's a walk from where vehicles stop, on a path through pine forest, and it's a proper walk rather than a stroll from a car park.

What that means for a plan

Treat this as a half day, not a stop.

That places it in a different category from most of what a first-time visitor does in Toraja. The burial sites and house compounds around Rantepao come in clusters and you can see several in a morning. Bittuang is out to the west, the approach takes time, and then you walk. It's for people who already have enough days that they can spend one differently, much like the Ollon grass hills in Bonggakaradeng in the south.

Because there's no reliable published information on the route or its current condition, this is a place to arrange through someone local rather than to attempt on the strength of a map. That argument is made properly in why a local guide helps in Toraja.

Season matters more here than elsewhere

A waterfall is a different thing in different months, and so is the path to it. Volume rises in the wet season, which is when the fall is at its most impressive and when a forest path is at its least pleasant and least safe. In drier months the walk is easier and the fall is smaller.

There isn't a right answer to that, but there is a decision, and it's the same seasonal calculation set out in Toraja rainfall and the wet season.
